How to Read the Malayalam Aksharamala

  • Find the consonant row in the first (pinned) column — e.g. ക (ka).
  • Find the vowel column across the top — e.g. ഇ (i).
  • The cell at the intersection is the Malayalam syllable — in this example കി (ki).
  • In the pronunciation table, each cell shows the Malayalam character on top and its Roman sound below.
  • Vowel signs (മാത്ര / mātra) are attached to consonants to change the vowel sound. For example, ക + ാ = കാ (kaa).
  • The last column shows the pure consonant form with the virama (്) mark — e.g. ക് (k, no vowel sound).
